The recent crash of an Amtrak train in Bourbonnais has affected Illinois residents as well as those across the country. Although much attention will be paid to determining why such an event occurred, it is important that we not neglect the individuals who sustained injuries in the crash and their family members who have gathered to support them.

On behalf of the Brain Injury Association of Illinois, the state’s only not-for-profit organization working on behalf of individuals with brain injuries and their families, I would like to offer our support to those affected by the crash.

Brain injuries (also referred to as “head injuries”) affect 2 million individuals in the United States each year. Although this is an alarming statistic, it is important to understand that not all brain injuries are fatal; in fact, concussions are the most common form of these injuries.

For those individuals sustaining brain injuries in the Amtrak crash, the days and weeks following the incident may prove confusing and difficult, both physically and emotionally. While medical professionals can provide these individuals and their families some guidance regarding recovery and rehabilitation, they have another place to turn. BIA of Illinois is dedicated to providing information, advocacy and support. At this confusing and frightening time, we help make connections with people in similar circumstances and help provide the structure necessary to understand and make critical decisions. We have 26 support groups statewide, and can help out-of-state families find support close to home. Anyone needing assistance may call 800-699-6443.
