Like millions of other people all over this country, I am saddened by the death of Joe DiMaggio. It was because of him that I first became interested in baseball as a child way back in 1947. In fact it was because of him that I became a Yankees fan even though I have lived all my life here in Chicago.

Joe DiMaggio was always humble in his success and considered himself a very lucky man to break in with such a great organization and last for so long. He led the Yankees to a long string of championships because he was an inspiration to his team in the way that he played the game. Even in his last years as a player, he gave the best that was in him to give despite his many nagging injuries. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
