Arthur Glad, 80, of Elburn, a retired teacher and athletic director at Elmwood Park High School, died Thursday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Born in Kankakee, Mr. Glad lived in Addison for 35 years before moving to Elburn four years ago. “He was a very kind, gentle man, soft-spoken,” said his eldest daughter, Cathy Vardakis. For 31 years Mr. Glad taught health, physical education and business and coached at Elmwood Park High School, retiring in 1987. Mr. Glad graduated from Kankakee High School in 1937. He received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and a master’s from the University of Illinois. His daughter said he loved sports, and since his retirement, Mr. Glad had devoted more energy to his favorite hobbies of golfing and bowling. Mr. Glad served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was a former member of Kankakee Masonic Lodge. Other survivors include his wife, Peggy; four other daughters, Susan Bell, Gretchen Johnston, Karen Schrepferman and Tina Courtin; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Services will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
