The death of Joe DiMaggio has rightly saddened the baseball world, but truthfully, when he wore the Yankee uniform I hated him. I hated all the Yankees from his era, but especially him.
The Sox could be in a three- or four-game winning streak when DiMaggio and the Yanks would hit town and they would not only sweep the Sox but do it in such a nonchalant and cavalier fashion that they made it look easy. Now, of course, I’m older and I realize what a gentleman and a classic ballplayer Joe DiMaggio was. It’s unfortunate we don’t appreciate our icons when they’re with us.
