Vesta M. Angle, 97, wife of the late Chicago Historical Society director, died Sunday at The Admiral retirement home on the North Side. Mrs. Angle was born in Piqua, Ohio, and attended Miami University of Ohio. She moved to Chicago in 1945 with her husband, Dr. Paul M. Angle, who died in 1975. Dr. Angle, an authority on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, was the director of the Chicago Historical Society for many years. He wrote many books on Lincoln and Illinois history, and he was known for reading aloud the Declaration of Independence at the annual 4th of July program on the east steps of the society’s building in Lincoln Park. Mrs. Angle served on the women’s boards of the Chicago Horticultural Society and Grant Hospital. She also was active in the Guild of the Chicago Historical Society. She lived in Old Town for many years before moving to The Admiral 10 years ago. Mrs. Angle is survived by a son, John; a daughter, Paula Franklin; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Plans for a memorial service are pending.
