Ruth Kaplan, 86, a leader for her West Rogers Park community, her congregation and her family, died Thursday at home of emphysema. Mrs. Kaplan raised four children while she and her husband, David, ran Midwest Pharmacy–later David Drugs–at Madison Street and Francisco Avenue. She also had a lifelong association with Congregation Ezras Israel, serving as president of the Sisterhood and editor of the temple bulletin. In 1983 she and her husband were honored for their long history of service to the synagogue. “Before we had a car, she took two buses back and forth to work each day, and yet she was always there each night to help us with our homework,” said her daughter, Arlene Morgan. Kaplan also is survived by another daughter, Esther Weissman; two sons, Steve and Phil; her twin sister, Ethel Sinnenberg; two brothers, Sam and Max; 10 grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in North Shore Congregation Israel, Perlman Sanctuary, 1185 Sheridan Rd., Glencoe.
