Some luxury lines giveth and some taketh away. For example, Seabourn, once the gold standard of ultraluxury cruising, is expected to undergo a sea change by year-end, altering its free alcohol and no-tipping policies, according to industry sources.
From its inception, the cruise line has prided itself on its luxury, all-inclusive features, especially its strict no-tipping policy. In fact, Seabourn employees who accepted a tip could be fired. But sources say that when Seabourn is “rebranded” next year and Sea Goddess I and II and Royal Viking Sun join the fleet, the line will allow the ships’ staff to accept tips.
At the same time, a change in the line’s alcohol policy is afloat. Bars in suites aboard Seabourn ships still will be stocked with free liquor, but liquor will no longer be free in public bars and lounges. However, wine with dinner still will be included with the price of the cruise.
