Lawrence A. Doyle, 85, a retired assistant fire chief in Flossmoor and a familiar sight in the community each evening as he walked his Australian shepherd, died March 22 in Lexington Health Care Center, Elmhurst. Born in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, Mr. Doyle moved to Flossmoor after his service in World War II as a Navy signal man. Called a “quintessential Irishman” by his son Robert , Mr. Doyle became a firefighter and retired in the mid-1980s. “He was just an all-around good guy,” said his other son, Thomas , who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a firefighter. “He worked hard his whole life and put his kids through college.” Mr. Doyle was also retired from a position as a printing production manager for Whiting Corp. Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane Smith and Margaret Doyle; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held last week.
