The members of the Faculty Council at Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, must call your attention to the unsupported and subtle characterization of the City Colleges as “troubled.” This tiny but powerful assertion appeared in “Gidwitz quits City Colleges Board” (Metro, April 15) by Gary Washburn and Michael Martinez.

Of course our campus buzzed with the news of the Gidwitz resignation, but most of us went about our usual work teaching our students. We aren’t “troubled.”

For many of our students Wright College represents a real opportunity. We will continue to meet their needs. Unsupported labels such as the one used in the article have an insidious way of becoming what people think of when they think of our colleges.
