The days of the college dorm room or apartment furnished haphazardly with a hodgepodge of older siblings’ hand-me-downs or parents’ castoffs are over. Good design has never been cheaper or more democratic. Collegians have access to a world of stylish and affordable home furnishings. The look is not entirely domestic: The home-office trend has trickled down to the college level. Expect to see office essentials–staplers, pen canisters, wastebaskets, clocks, telephones, worktables and lighting fixtures–with a streamlined, industrial look in steel or aluminum, or in brightly colored acrylics, woods or plastics. Add in a candy-colored Apple iMac and the freshman class is open for business.
