The Elk Grove Village Board has hired an urban planning consultant to come up with ways to enhance village-owned property near residential areas.

According to Village President Craig Johnson, trustees have been talking about improving the appearance of village crosswalks, parkways and rights of way. They decided last week to hire a planning consultant to help them develop a long-range planning blueprint.

As part of its $9,901 fee, Planning Resources Inc., Wheaton, will meet with community representatives to get their opinions before presenting a final plan to the Village Board.

“We don’t want to do everything piecemeal,” Johnson said. “We want to create a whole comprehensive plan.”

Johnson said the board is considering enhanced landscaping on parkways, brick crosswalks and decorative and more efficient street lighting.

“The residents have done an excellent job of keeping up their properties,” he said. “Now it’s the community’s turn.”

The board expects the plan, which could span a period of 5 to 10 years, will be completed by late summer or early fall, Johnson said.
