More than 500 weapons were turned in during a voluntary collection drive in Waukesha County.
CrimeStoppers of Waukesha County and local law-enforcement personnel collected 562 firearms Sunday at the third countywide Voluntary Gun Disposal Program.
Home safety was a leading reason many turned in their weapons, said John Wallschlaeger, a CrimeStoppers event organizer.
People who turned over a firearm received a $50 department store gift certificate.
Thirty-nine percent of homes in Waukesha County have firearms, according to a 1998 survey by the Waukesha County Health Council.
