The Tribune’s choice of the word “victim” to describe 11-year-old Ellana Jones (Page 1, June 3) is unfortunate. As a 13-year survivor of melanoma, I never saw myself as a victim, rather as a patient, a fighter, a survivor.
Use of the word “victim” suggests that the patient is doomed. Here is an article describing Ellana as hopeful, encouraging and inspirational. I don’t get much inspiration from victims. I get inspiration from heroes–like Ellana.
