BASEBALL: White Sox at Cubs
2:20 p.m., WGN-Ch. 9
Just another three-game series, right? Hardly. This one is for city supremacy–or at least until they play again in July at Comiskey Park. Hopefully, the games with Sammy Sosa and Frank Thomas will be as good as the fights and arguments in the stands.
HALL WORTHY
How’s this for a profile of a Basketball Hall of Famer?
– First-team All-American with a 24.4-point average over three seasons.
– Seven-time NBA All-Star forward with a career average of 18.2, including 19.2 his last season.
– Integral member of one of the greatest teams of all time–Wilt Chamberlain’s 1967 champion in Philadelphia, which posted a 68-13 regular-season record.
Well, Chet “the Jet” Walker, who starred at Bradley and with the 76ers and Bulls, is up for selection again this year. Other players on the ballot are Maurice Cheeks, Dennis Johnson, Gus Johnson, Bob McAdoo, Kevin McHale, Sidney Moncrief and Jo Jo White.
PONY UP
When you think of polo, you might conjure up an image of a cologne or casual shirt. But on Sunday, children in Jamaica will benefit from a real polo match at the Oak Brook Polo Grounds.
The Chukka Cove Polo Club of Jamaica will be here to compete in the Glenlivet Jamaica versus USA International Polo Challenge. The event is a fundraiser for the non-profit Jamaica Kids Connection, which develops “a safe and nurturing environment for children in Jamaica.”
For polo diehards, mark your calendars: Matches will be at 1 and 3 p.m. every Sunday through Sept. 5. For information, call Karen Martino at 630-990-2394.
BODY BY . . .
One of the founders of Major League Lacrosse, which could be coming as close to Chicago as Columbus next June, is Jake Steinfeld. The former lacrosse player at Cortland State is, of course, famous as a fitness guru, but he also is the author of the instructional book, “Don’t Quit!” He must have stick-to-itiveness.
BROWSING
