If you’ve ever wanted to spend a night or two in the great outdoors but were deterred by your lack of camping savvy (or equipment), the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has a solution.

Through mid-August, the department is offering its Beginner Camper Program at select campsites in the Catskill Mountains. Participants get a tent, sleeping bags, mattress pads, cooking equipment and a staff member to offer instruction. The cost is $14 per night per site (there’s also a one-time $2.50 registration fee; and there’s a maximum of six persons per site).
