Herman Meyer, 87, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Southwest Chicago and a longtime Commonwealth Edison Co. employee, died after a long illness Saturday in Belhaven Retirement home, Chicago. A Chicago native, Mr. Meyer graduated from Englewood High School and attended Northwestern University for two years before beginning his 46-year career at ComEd said his daughter-in-law, Mary Meyer. In World War II, Mr. Meyer was an Army staff sergeant and military police officer in the 86th Infantry Division and served in Europe and the Pacific, Mary Meyer said. After the war, Mr. Meyer returned to ComEd where he served as a district manager and, before his 1976 retirement, as a senior marketing engineer. He became involved with the Kiwanis Club through work and devoted himself to the organization serving as secretary and eventually president of the southwest Chicago club. “He was a man who cared about children and wanted children to benefit from any advantages that could be given them from society,” his daughter-in-law said. Last year, he received a Hixson Award in recognition of his longtime service to the organization. Mr. Meyer is also survived by two sons, Charles and Bruce; a sister, Helen Friedman; and a brother, Arthur. Visitation will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in Beverly Ridge Funeral Home, 10415 S. Kedzie Ave., Chicago. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
