It is depressing to read that John McCarron believes “there’s not that much wrong with managed care.” Here are some facts (according to various studies and presentations) to be considered when trying to make up one’s mind when comparing managed care with private practice:

– Under managed care, AIDS patients die sooner.

– Under managed care, elderly and poor have worse outcomes.

– Under managed care mental health is underserved.

– There is increased mortality for renal dialysis patients under managed care compared with private practice.

Mr. McCarron reminds us that employer-sponsored health insurance is entirely voluntary, implying that employers are unsung altruists. The truth is that this insurance is 100 percent deductible as an employer business expense, which is not the case for employees.
