Kathleen Parker is right–we need to teach our children that “marital happiness is earned” (“Surviving marital miseries,” Commentary, July 14). She suggests some straight talk to our children about the value of marriage.

But in an age where traditional wedding vows are being changed to say “as long as we both shall love,” is talk enough? We also need to have the courage to do the “hard work and self-sacrifice” so our children can see what a happy marriage takes.
