Drivers familiar with congestion at the intersection of Illinois Highway 47 and Main Street in Huntley can expect a real test of patience beginning Monday when construction begins.

The project will continue until late October.

Crews will begin by creating an additional lane allowing northbound traffic to turn left on Main Street. Village officials hope the project will create extra room for trucks trying to turn while freeing the forward lane for northbound travel.

“It’s a (circa) 1975 intersection, and it should have been fixed a long time ago,” said Village President James Dhamer. “But I think it’s going to be very positive to finally get it done.”

The first phase of the project, expected to last 30 days, will allow Ameritech, NICOR and Commonwealth Edison to reposition utilities. The second phase of about two months will entail paving and road construction.

IDOT and village officials hope to minimize delays by scheduling some construction between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
