`SportsCentury’ 50 Greatest Athletes: No. 23, Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Time 9:30 p.m., ESPN
There has been much debate over ESPN’s greatest athletes of the century series, but there’s no denying that Joyner-Kersee belongs near the top of the list. The Olympic star dominated her generation like no other.
WAY AWAY GAME
The Cubs are being given the “opportunity” to play their regular-season opener in Japan next year against the Mets. Supposedly the Cardinals were the first choice, but they declined. Cubs players will vote on it Friday.
BREW-HAHA
A judge has ruled that the Coors Brewing Co. can no longer call its product “the official beer of NFL players.” Seems that the players union struck the deal without getting permission from the NFL. The league says it has sole rights to the trademark and wants to make the judge’s temporary injunction permanent. A hearing is set for Aug. 18.
THE LINE UP
The Miami Dolphins could field an offensive formation with a convicted felon at running back (Cecil “the Diesel” Collins), convicted felons at two wide receiver spots (Robert Baker, Lamar Thomas) and a flanker under federal indictment (Tony Martin).
CLASS OF ’95
The Oakland Raiders have three running backs in camp who were drafted within five picks of each other in the first round of the 1995 draft:
– Tyrone Wheatley, drafted 17th by the Giants.
– Napoleon Kaufman, drafted 18th by the Raiders.
– Rashaan Salaam, drafted 21st by the Bears.
DID YOU KNOW?
NASCAR driver Darrell Waltrip, who will retire at the end of the 2000 season, has won at least one race in 17 of the past 27 seasons. He has yet to win a race this year.
