GOLF: Sprint International

After last week, you don’t suppose CBS will sneak us a few peeks at Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia even if they’re not in contention?
AUTHOR!
Athlete, actor, rapper … Shaq O’Neal’s resume now includes author. The Lakers’ big man has written “Shaq and the Beanstalk and Other Very Tall Tales,” a children’s book with a noble purpose. Proceeds from sales of the book will go to the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program of Newark, N.J., Shaq’s hometown. RIF is the nation’s leading children’s literacy organization, providing books and other literacy resources at no cost to the kids or their families.
Nice move, Shaq.
CLUELESSLY HIP
The premier issue of Talk magazine includes a list of 50 great “talkers,” 50 people whom the hopelessly trendy new mag says it hopes are never silenced. Two athletes made the list: the glib and unfailingly amiable Tony Gwynn and . . . Latrell Sprewell?
Yep, Latrell Sprewell, from the same league that offers Jayson Williams and Charles Barkley.
Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.
SUCH A DEAL
The Cubs actually made money by having University of Utah basketball coach Rick Majerus sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch at the Arizona game on Aug. 10. Majerus bought 75 tickets for friends and family members from Chicago and Milwaukee and booked the Stadium Club for a pregame reception.
And as a singer, he’s a darn good basketball coach.
PICK ‘EM
Jeter? Rodriguez? Garciaparra? Though his team has nothing to play for, Seattle’s A-Rod is making his case as the best of an amazing group of American League shortstops. He missed 32 games with an injured knee, but through Friday he was batting .319 with 32 homers, 87 RBIs and 89 runs scored . . . in 88 games.
MVP numbers those.
