Frequent-flier miles may be the norm, but now exercise enthusiasts can earn their own perks while exploring the trails of McHenry County thanks to a program called Century Hikers.

“It’s really an independent thing,” said Kim Caldwell, an official with the McHenry County Conservation District. “It’s a way to add a little bit of incentive.”

For a $10 membership, participants are provided with trail maps and are asked to log miles hiked on conservation paths. Hikers set their own pace and may earn awards.
