Michael Garast, 84, who worked in a Chicago steel mill from age 17 to his retirement at 65 in 1981, died Tuesday in a hospice home in Scottsdale, Ariz. He grew up in Chicago and went to work at the former U.S. Steel South Works. “He worked in the mill his whole life–lied about his age to get in a year early,” said his daughter, Kathleen. He started as a crane operator and later was a licensed heavy equipment mechanic. After the whistle blew, he enjoyed pinochle, bowling, fishing, “and a little gambling now and then,” Kathleen said. After his retirement, he moved to Scottsdale. Others survivors include two sons, Mark and David. Mass will be said Saturday in Scottsdale.
