Company: icontact.com, a Chicago-based provider of interactive communications software for the Internet
Salary range for this job: $20,000 to $30,000
Time on this job: 10 months
Previous jobs: I was a waitress for nine years. Before that, I was a customer-service representative at Crest Photo Lab in Elgin.
Age: 38
Education: A diploma from Dundee High School
How I got this job: When I was waitressing, the company founder and the NetRep manager came into the diner for dinner. We hit it off, and two days later, they came back and asked if I’d be interested in working at icontact. A few weeks later, I went to the office for an interview, liked what I saw and joined the company.
Why I took this job: I had a good feeling about the place. There was room for advancement, and everyone I met was congenial and warm. I also could tell the place would take off.
Main responsibilities: I’m a NetRep for icontact.com’s Web site. I provide on-line, real-time assistance to people visiting the site. This assistance is both sales and customer-service oriented. When someone comes onto our site, I’ll ask through the computer how I can help.
Best thing about the job: I’m treated as an equal by everyone–from other NetReps to the CEO. It’s so important because it inspires you to work and be loyal to the company.
Worst thing about the job: My train ride. It’s one hour and 20 minutes one way.
My ideal next job: A step or two higher here. I couldn’t think of a better place to work.
Advice to job seekers in this field: Further your education. Be yourself and be personable to customers. Even though customers can’t hear or see you, they can read your smile through your words on the screen.
