In his Oct. 6 letter, Paul L. Whiteley Sr. calls the love of money “the root of all wrongdoing.” Money is, in fact, the payment we receive for our labor. Money puts a tangible value on our ideas and our actions. It shows us that we are of value to other members of society.
Money gives us a standard unit of trade. It is the means by which we survive in a civilized society. Take away money, and we would be reduced to a primitive culture of savages trying to barter without a medium of exchange.
Perhaps Mr. Whiteley thinks that we would be better off if the money we do have was distributed more evenly among us. The conditions in countries such as Russia and China, which have tried this form of economy, say otherwise. It is not perfect, but a free economy provides the best conditions for the greatest number of people.
This country was built on freedom, and the freedom to make money, to receive payment for our achievements, is included.
Money is a symbol of hard work, of innovative ideas, of a job well done.
Money is a symbol of everything that is right with this country.
