This is in response to an Oct. 16 letter written by Joyce Park. I go to Maine South High School, and her letter offended me. The population of Maine South is not as diverse as her school, Maine East, but that shouldn’t sadden Ms. Park. Maine South has a Spanish Club, French Club and Italian Club, to name a few that are open to the whole student body. I doubt we are more likely to have a school shooting than a more diverse school. Recently both schools were part of a threat along with Maine West. This supports the fact that the diversity of a school has nothing to do with its susceptibility to school shootings.
The comment that hurt most was, “we all accept our peers’ differences–we actually encourage them.” The phrasing made it sound as if the students of Maine South do not. We aren’t as diverse ethnically, but we’re diverse in interests, the way we dress and more. We are mostly Caucasian, but we have different backgrounds–Irish, Polish, Italian and German descent.
I regret that Ms. Park felt awkward at Maine South.
