Lucent Technologies Inc. plans to cut its payroll by 1,500 positions, or about 1 percent, by the end of the year, using voluntary buyouts offered to technicians.
About 400 Lucent technicians working in Illinois will be offered the buyouts, and the company expects about 70 will take the early retirement offer, which can include as much as two years’ pay.
New technology enables Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent to do more diagnostic and repair work at a distance, requiring fewer people who must visit remote sites to maintain equipment.
