HIGHLAND PARK — As a former Detroiter, I have a great sense of nostalgia for Cranbrook (“Architectural Delights”; Oct. 3). I recall touring the Scripps-Booth home years ago, in mid-summer, and ending the tour at the porch overlooking the garden. The beautiful flowers, fountains and statues were like a dream. I have not visited in many years but was glad to learn of the many improvements planned.

HOMELAND REVISITED

DELAWARE WATER GAP, Pa. — Thanks for bringing me a little bit of my home land, in your eloquent words, and passionate but fair perspective of that wonderful city of Rio (“The Real Rio”; Sept. 26).

I was so delighted to see some of the goodies of Brazil exposed abroad. Unfortunately, it seems like the general press benefits more from the ugly side than the brighter one. You actually brought tears into my eyes. It made me think of how beautiful, light and spiritual life can be there.

Saudades do Brazil!

ON TOP OF THE WORLD

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The article on narrowboating in England (“Slow Boats”; Oct. 17) brought back wonderful memories. Fourteen years ago, four of us took the Black Prince 47-foot Champion from Whixall to Llangollen in Wales.

Highlights were that long tunnel at Chirk, with the railroad bridge rising above, and that awesome Pontcyllte aqueduct at Trevor — 1,007 feet long and 126 feet above the River Dee. While the others stayed on the boat, I ran across on the towpath; it was like running on top of the world!
