Trudy Root, 93, a former bacteriologist at the Michigan State Health Department in Lansing, Mich., died Friday in the Presbyterian Home in Evanston. Born in New Hampshire, Mrs. Root also lived in Washington before moving first to Michigan and then the Chicago area. During World War II, while her husband, Lloyd, was stationed in Washington, Mrs. Root worked at the U.S. Public Health Office, helping prepare antibiotics for troops overseas. Later, working for Michigan, Mrs. Root assisted physicians in the development of a DPT vaccine. After moving to the Chicago area, Mrs. Root became a longtime member of the St. Joan of Arc Church in Skokie, where she helped raise funds and served as president of the women’s club. She also served for a time as president of the Evanston Women’s Club, and was a former member of Evanston Golf Club. She is survived by a daughter, Sally McIntosh; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joan of Arc Church, 9248 N. Lawndale Ave., Skokie.
