Chicago schools chief Paul Vallas says that it seems wrong to him to have marksmanship training in schools after the tragedy in Columbine, Colo. But there seems to be little logic in such a position. How is it possible to confuse the JROTC training, which promotes discipline, teamwork and the proper use of firearms, with what happened at Columbine?
As someone who has lost a loved one due to a gun, I can sympathize with Vallas. But we must be able to distinguish between the responsible and irresponsible use of firearms. Instead Vallas’ decision to eliminate rifle training seems to confuse the two. That’s unfortunate.
