Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Thanks to the Nov. 7 editorial “Gonna Lotto? Don’t bet on it,” there are many people, like myself, who now know that playing the lottery isn’t the soundest savings or investment strategy, that the lottery just doesn’t deliver the yields of a carefully managed stock portfolio.

But it misses a critical point. The reason millions of people play is simply because it’s fun. Although I know the odds against winning are astronomical, I play simply because I get a kick out of playing.

It’s a bit insulting and naive to state that many Americans view the lottery as some sort of nest egg. If the lottery went away tomorrow, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find former players who weren’t using the extra dollar on some other form of entertainment.
