Trustees in Mokena on Monday night set aesthetic guidelines for businesses to qualify for a grant program aimed at helping spruce up downtown.

Money has been set aside for grants for facade and sign improvements as part of a larger plan to renovate Mokena’s traditional downtown business district centered around Front Street and Wolf Road.

One of the goals of the downtown revitalization program has been to “promote full occupancy and further investment,” Roberta DeYoung, economic development director, said.

The appearance guidelines emphasize the small town, turn-of-the-century atmosphere prevalent in Mokena’s early days.
