Rev. Eugene Doherty, 86, of Naperville, died Saturday at Edward Hospital. Born in Chicago, Father Doherty was ordained in 1939 at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. He served parishes in Kankakee, Will and DuPage Counties, with his last appointment as pastor of St. John the Apostle Church in Villa Park. He was pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Naperville from 1970 to 1978, when he decided to step down for health reasons. Father Doherty was the first elected dean of the DuPage-Kendall County Deanery, serving from 1971-74. He also was a diocesan consulter, a member of the Priests Senate and a charter member of the Diocesan School Board and the Diocesan Religious Education Board. Survivors include a brother, James; and a sister, Helen O’Neill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.
