A school board reversed a decision to post the 10 Commandments in district offices, saying it could not afford to fight an American Civil Liberties Union suit.

The Val Verde Board of Education in Riverside County, east of Santa Ana, voted unanimously Monday to overturn September and October votes to display the commandments.

The ACLU sued last week on behalf of several parents, citing a 1980 Supreme Court ruling that posting the 10 Commandments in schools was government promotion of religion.

Board President Robert Givens said, “We have to respect the Supreme Court decision, and we didn’t want to chance having to use public funds to take on this fight.”
