Russ Springer, an original Arizona Diamondback, returned to the team Tuesday when he agreed to a $4 million, two-year contract. Springer, a 31-year-old right-hander, was 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA and one save in 49 games for Atlanta last season.

In other signings, the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a $3.45 million, two-year deal with free agent reliever Heathcliff Slocumb, 33. Right-hander Gil Heredia, who was eligible for salary arbitration, agreed to a one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics. Right-hander Chad Ogea agreed to a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers.

– Two members of the 3,000-hit club got coaching jobs: Paul Molitor will join the Minnesota Twins staff and Rod Carew will be the Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting instructor.
