After each tragic shooting in America, the Tribune prints a letter from a well-intentioned but naive individual saying that the solution is simple: Ban guns.
The problem is, we’ve already banned murder, and it doesn’t help. We’ve banned criminals from buying guns, and it doesn’t help.
Banning guns has been proven to have a counterproductive effect on crime. When law-abiding citizens are denied the means to protect themselves, they become sitting ducks for monstrous predators.
To all those well-intentioned gun-banners out there, ask yourselves how well prohibition of drugs, murder, assault, even little things like speeding, has worked. You risk putting millions of honest Americans at the mercy of violent thugs. Your hearts are in the right place, but your heads are in the sand.
