Citing its desire to be as equitable as possible, the Hinsdale Village Board has delayed a decision on how much taxpayers ought to pay for a $28,000 sidewalk installation near an elementary school.
Trustees recently opted to refer the matter to the Environment and Public Services committee to make a recommendation on when there should be exceptions to the traditional 50-50 split between all village taxpayers and residents of an immediate area who are seeking sidewalk construction.
Neighbors last week asked the village to pay for a sidewalk along a three-block stretch of Fuller Road between Elm and Jefferson Streets. It is two blocks from The Lane School, and neighbors say a sidewalk would address a concern about the safety of children and others in the heavily traveled area.
Trustee George Faulstich said there is no evidence a safety hazard currently exists.
Village Board members are leery of setting a precedent that they fear might open the floodgates to others seeking sidewalk installations.
