On Aug. 14, 1945, we went downtown to Grant Park with thousands of other people to hug, cheer and burst into spontaneous songs, like “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again” because the Japanese had surrendered.

We would finally be with our young men and women who left home in their teens and were not heard from for months. We also shed sad tears for our 18-year-old neighbor who lost his life on Iwo Jima.
