The summer of 1940 or ’41 brought two friends to Chicago from Indiana who wanted to go downtown to see Frank Sinatra sing with Tommy Dorsey. I didn’t know who he was but went along and got his autograph on the flap of an envelope in pencil, and I wrote around the edge of the envelope: “Singer with Tommy Dorsey.”
