H. Edward Barnicle, 84, founder of Dolphin Cartage in Chicago, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, in Hinsdale Hospital. He was born in Chicago and was a longtime resident of the city’s South Side. For the past 20 years, he lived in Willowbrook. During World War II, Mr. Barnicle was a submariner and in 1945 was dispatched to Buenos Aires to join a Navy crew assigned to bring back U977, a German submarine suspected of transporting high-ranking Nazi officers out of Europe. In business, Mr. Barnicle displayed the submariner’s symbol on his trucks. In the 1950s, he co-founded Chatham-Avalon Little League in Chicago and was named Man of the Year in 1989 by the Chicago Regional Trucking Association. Survivors include three sons, Ed, Terry and Martin; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Tom. Services will be at 10:15 a.m. Saturday in Coglianese Funeral Home, 7508 S. County Line Rd., Burr Ridge, with mass at 11 a.m. in St. Cletus Catholic Church, 600 W. 55th St., La Grange.
