These basic security rules should be posted near every computer at home or at work:

– Do not give out your phone number, address, or other personal information, unless needed for a transaction at a site you trust.

– Be extremely careful about giving out credit card numbers.

– If you feel someone is being threatening or dangerous, inform your Internet provider, which can issue a warning or can even withdraw on-line privileges.

– It is important to know and use Internet lingo. For example–HHOK (translated “ha, ha, only kidding”) or J/K (“just kidding”).

– Some e-mail messages are terse and brisk, leaving them open to various interpretations by readers. Users must exercise caution in what they say on the Internet.
