Skip Bayless’ column about Michael Jordan joining the Wizards (Tribune, Jan. 20) is very interesting, and his point about ex-stars rarely succeeding as coaches or general managers is valid. But as a lifelong 76ers fan, I disagree that Jerry West alone among ex-stars has really acheived greatness as a coach or GM.
Billy Cunningham, who is in the Basketball Hall of Fame and was named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players, was a wonderful coach for the 76ers, guiding the team to the 1983 NBA title and winning almost 500 games in a relatively brief career before retiring.
