Many people are complaining that there are too many stories in the news about who will be elected president of the United States in the year 2000 election. I tend to agree, but I also feel that the real concern should be who will be elected vice president. The reason is just a simple review of what happened to men who were elected president in a year that ended with a zero:

– William Henry Harrison, winner of the election of 1840, died of pneumonia in 1841.

– Abraham Lincoln, winner of the election of 1860, was assassinated in 1865.

– James A. Garfield, winner of the election of 1880, was mortally wounded in 1881.

– William McKinley, winner of the election of 1900, was assassinated in 1901.

– Warren G. Harding, winner of the election of 1920, died of a heart attack in 1923.

– Franklin D. Roosevelt, winner of the election of 1940, died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1945.

– John F. Kennedy, winner of the election of 1960, was assassinated in 1963.

– Ronald Reagan, winner of the election of 1980, was shot in 1981; he lived, but the bullet came within an inch of his heart.
