Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

From reading “Real life as a senior citizen” (Voice of the people, Feb. 22), I learned the following:

Seniors are too stupid to know what Windows 95 or 98 mean. Does it mean the number of windows in a high-rise?

Seniors are culturally deprived because they don’t watch Leno and Letterman. They do foolish things like reading books instead.

Seniors consider grocery shopping a very exciting event.

Seniors put on their pajamas and watch the 6 o’clock news.

I protest!

Here’s what seniors are really doing today:

They are not sitting in rocking chairs and talking about “the good old days.”

They do not think of retirement as a time to sit back and do nothing.

Many seniors are still working in their 60s, 70s and 80s.

Many are doctors, scientists, teachers and lawyers.

They are senators, and men and women in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Many seniors are going to colleges and taking courses.

Many seniors go to Elder Hostels for vacations and take more courses.

Many seniors are in fitness programs and work out like young people.

They play golf and tennis, swim, run, bicycle and go walking.

Instead of hibernating, as the letter suggests, they go to plays, concerts, operas, movies and lectures.

Many seniors travel all over this country and all over the world.

Thousands of seniors have computers. Many more are taking computer courses so they can be a part of this technological age.

Seniors today are enjoying many aspects of life, just like everyone else. They work, go to school, have many interests.

They don’t want to just sit and watch the world go by in this new century.
