A big event opens June 1 in Hannover, Germany, when that country hosts its first World Exposition. “Humankind-Nature-Technology: the creation of a new world” is the theme of EXPO 2000.

Past expositions, such as those in Chicago (1893) and New York City (1939) were designed to highlight technological progress with an emphasis on industry. EXPO 2000 organizers say the focus this year is on the human benefits technology can bring about.

At least 187 countries plan presentations in their own pavilions or on the site of the Hannover Trade Fair. Sponsors expect 4 million visitors before the exposition ends on Oct. 31.
