Mom-and-pop stores across the country are struggling to compete with supermarkets and Wal-Marts.
The number of small grocery stores in the United States dropped 40 percent from 1988 to 1998, according to the Food Marketing Institute. The number of chain supermarkets increased 16 percent during the same period.
Small stores made up 42 percent of grocery stores in 1988, compared with 30 percent in 1998.
