If Dan Marino thrives in Minnesota, then Miami fans will know it wasn’t all his fault, that Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt were completely wrong about how Marino was used, abused, handcuffed and ultimately thrown away. But if Marino fails, then what? Will his legion of loyalists finally face up to the facts, admit to being blinded by love? Or will they point fingers in new directions, blaming Dennis Green, the Vikings’ offensive line, artificial turf or Jesse Ventura? Meanwhile, in a TV studio, Johnson would chuckle and say told-you-so. It’s sad it has come to this, Marino too stubborn to neatly call it quits, the Dolphins looking like clumsy villains in a public relations war they cannot win. Once Wannstedt made the decision he didn’t want Marino back (a painful but necessary football decision), the team was in a bind. If Wannstedt came right out and said that, there would be an enraged segment of the fan base. But by saying nothing and signing a replacement, those same fans are saying the same thing.
