Our governor dismisses the corruption in the secretary of state’s office with the remark, “It’s a part of the culture there, I guess.” Who does George Ryan think is responsible for allowing that culture to infect the office? Elected officials have a sworn duty to uphold the public trust. Abusing that trust through inattention, mismanagement or worse is a most heinous betrayal of taxpayers’ interests.

The governor seems to be saying that he is powerless to change the behavior of state employees. I’m not buying it. If he can’t do it, let’s find somebody who can.
