The Zion City Council has approved four more units per building at the Woods condominium project at Lewis Avenue and 25th Street.
Jim Funderburk, developer of the Woods project, told the council at a recent meeting that the outside of the buildings would not change.
Funderburk explained that the interior of each building will now consist of 10 two-bedroom and four one-bedroom dwellings, rather than the six two-bedroom and four three-bedroom dwellings that were in the original plan in 1991.
After hearing the revised plan, council members had questions about the need for more parking.
Based on the zoning ordinance, the additional 20 units would require 40 more parking spaces. Funderburk and Jim Donaldson, president of the Woods Condo Association, told the council that parking would not be a problem.
The council granted a variance from the additional parking requirement, and Funderburk agreed to build three of the remaining five buildings in the complex, then see if parking problems arise.
“I think it’s about time we have (upscale housing) in Zion,” Councilman Jim Taylor said.
