The Coast Guard plans to give up jurisdiction over the Point Betsie Lighthouse, but no one has stepped forward to take control of the national historic landmark.
The lighthouse, adjacent buildings and about 2 acres of the about 6.5-acre land parcel will revert to the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported Tuesday. No timetable for the exchange has been set.
Established and lit in 1858, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Light Stations in 1969. Its tower is 100 feet high.
Coast Guard personnel moved out in the early 1990s. Its light is fully automated and will continue operating for navigational purposes. The Coast Guard is to retain ownership of the remaining property.
